Addiction to a substance (alcohol, drugs) and other compulsive disorders such as gambling can wreak havoc on the person\u2019s life. It affects all areas of the person \u2013 physical, mental, social (relationships), career, finance and spiritual.<\/p>\n

Therefore any treatment needs to be holistic \u2013 to address all the affected areas. Any aspect that is overlooked may turn out to be a major trigger for relapse.<\/p>\n

There is evidence to suggest that inpatient treatment is most beneficial. I call it \u2018rehabilitation\u2019.<\/p>\n

Rehabilitation \u2013 \u201chaving someone have normal life again\u201d, \u201cmake someone or something respected again\u201d, \u201cmake something suitable for use again\u201d \u2013 these definitions adequately indicate the objective of a rehabilitation centre for addictions<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n

A good treatment centre is a \u2018rehab\u2019. It helps in making an addict healthy, useful, independent and productive. The affected person is re-integrated into his or her family and social setting.<\/p>\n

A rehab should have all the tools required to help \u201csomeone have a normal life again\u201d. In our view, a rehab must have:<\/p>\n

\u2022 Competent medical and psychiatric inputs<\/p>\n

\u2022 Physical exercise (Yoga is a good option), as part of the routine<\/p>\n

\u2022 Empathetic and experienced counselors (at least a few who are themselves in recovery, to lend a critical element of identification)<\/p>\n

\u2022 A clinical psychologist as a resource (to diagnose potential psychiatric issues)<\/p>\n

\u2022 Emphasis on family support<\/p>\n

\u2022 A spiritual element (such as meditation)<\/p>\n

\u2022 Strict protocols for therapy<\/p>\n

\u2022 High ethical standards \u2013 top to bottom<\/p>\n

There is no teacher like experience. If a rehab<\/strong> aims to incorporate at least these elements, each will be continually refined and evolved in synergy, to offer the better services for the addicts, so that they are optimally and fruitfully \u2018rehabilitated<\/strong>\u2019.<\/p>\n
