Addiction to a substance (alcohol, drugs) and other compulsive disorders such as gambling can wreak havoc on the person\u2019s life. It affects all areas of the person \u2013 physical, mental, social (relationships), career, finance and spiritual.<\/p>\n
Therefore any treatment needs to be holistic \u2013 to address all the affected areas. Any aspect that is overlooked may turn out to be a major trigger for relapse.<\/p>\n
Therefore, ‘inpatient treatment’ is most beneficial. I call it \u2018rehabilitation<\/strong>\u2019.<\/p>\n Rehabilitation<\/em><\/strong> \u2013 \u201chaving someone have normal life again\u201d, \u201cmake someone or something respected again\u201d, \u201cmake something suitable for use again\u201d \u2013 these definitions adequately indicate the objective of a rehabilitation centre for addictions.<\/p>\n A good treatment centre is a \u2018rehab<\/strong>\u2019. It helps in making an addict healthy, useful, independent and productive.<\/p>\n A rehab should have all the tools required to help \u201csomeone have a normal life again<\/em>\u201d. In my view, a rehab must have:<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n Competent medical and psychiatric inputs<\/p>\n<\/li>\n Physical exercise (Yoga<\/strong> is a good option), as part of the routine<\/p>\n<\/li>\n Empathetic and experienced counselors (at least a few who are themselves in recovery, to lend a critical element of identification)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n A clinical psychologist as a resource (to diagnose potential psychiatric issues)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n Emphasis on family support<\/p>\n<\/li>\n A spiritual element (such as meditation<\/strong>)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n Strict protocols for therapy<\/p>\n<\/li>\n High ethical standards \u2013 top to bottom<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n <\/p>\n There is no teacher like experience.
