Addicts love getting high. They want to be high all the time.

After treatment, they fall to the ground and look for new highs. I was so used to the chemical kicks that I was scared I wouldn’t be able to ‘enjoy’ life without alcohol or drugs.

My counsellors at the rehab taught me how to enjoy life with substances. Here are 5 ways of getting naturally high (without chemicals):


The most common way to get high is by exercising. Physical exercise releases the brain’s “feel good chemicals” such as endorphins which helps create a relaxing feeling. It is also fun. You  can create your own personalized exercise regime with own goals and feel a sense of achievement and well-being when you achieve your targets.

Eat Healthy

Diet plays an important role in addiction recovery. Include plenty of fruits, veggies and lots of protein. Reduce or avoid processed food, sugars and caffeine intake. A healthy, balanced diet leads to physical and psychological well-being.

With the proper diet, you’re going to feel awesome!

Discover Mother Nature

Nature is a powerful source of natural high. Go for a walk in the park, visit a jungle resort. Marvel at the majesty of hills, rivers and valleys. Smell the flowers and savour the peaceful nights under the stars.

Mother Nature gives us a natural high like no other!

Get Creative

Discover and nurture your creative side. Play a musical instrument, write poetry, jot down your thoughts in a journal, or sketch a landscape. There are plenty ways to getting naturally high when you indulge in a creative activity.

Go for a good movie, attend an art gallery exhibition, read an interesting book – keep discovering the world through art!

Be Grateful

During addiction, we developed a negative attitude. In recovery, we begin to look at the positive side of things. You will win in life if you stay positive. Even during tough times, look to the future with hope.

Make a gratitude list. You’ll be amazed at how many good things are happening to you. There’s so much to be grateful for.

The best way to be naturally high? Stay in the present. The past is gone. The future is yet to come. Do not spoil your today by worrying about yesterday or tomorrow.
